The operation of Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank in India dates back to 1980 when the former "Emirates Commercial Bank" was set up. On this day, the Bank commenced branch operations at its present premises in Mumbai.

In 1985, 3 commercial banks operating in the UAE were merged and as a result of an Amiri Decree and a new bank was established under the name Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank.

The banks that merged were the Federal Commercial Bank, the Khaleej Commercial Bank and the Emirates Commercial Bank.

Out of this merger, the Indian operation began functioning under the new name of "Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank".
