The University of Allahabad is a public central university established on 23 September 1887. At one point it was called the "Oxford of the East". On 24 June 2005 its Central University status was restored through the University Allahabad Act 2005 of the Parliament of India.

University of Allahabad was ranked No. 8 by the India Today in the Indian University Rankings and No. 5 in the North Indian University Rankings of 2012.
