The University of Madras has as early as 1911 instituted an Oriental Faculty for the study of classical languages like Sanskrit, Arabic and Persian, which were then being taught in Oriental Colleges.

B.A. Afzal-Ul-Ulama or Bachelor of Arts in Afzal-Ul-Ulama is an undergraduate Arabic language course which is not offered by Madras University.
