The Department of Gastroenterology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences AIIMS was established in the year 1971 with an aim to create qualified gastroenterologists for the country.

The department has been consistently ranked as the Best Department of Gastroenterology in India for many years in surveys conducted by leading News weeklies.

In Dec 2011 department was awarded as the Best Department of Gastroenterology in India at the CNBC TV18 India Healthcare Awards.
