Gulbarga University was built up in 1980 by an Act of Karnataka State. Its purview reaches out to the five areas of Gulbarga, Bidar, Raichur, Bellary and Koppal of Hyderabad Karnataka.

Prior it was a post-graduate focus of Karnatak University, Dharwad since 1970. The principle grounds is arranged on a 860 sections of land of land, 6 kilo meters east of Gulbarga city. It has 38 post-graduate divisions and 4 post-graduate focuses situated at Krishnadevarayanagar, Bellary, Raichur and Bidar. Another post-graduate focus at Basavakalyan is on the iron block.

The University selects around 3500 understudies each year for different post-graduate, M.Phil. furthermore, Ph.D. programs in different controls.

There are around 160 employees and around 700 specialized and non-specialized supporting staff. There are 305 schools partnered to this University which select graduate/certificate courses in expressions, expressive arts, music, sociologies, science and innovation, trade, instruction and law.
