Bharathiar University has one of the department is The Department of Zoology. This department was started in 1973 as one of the departments of Madras University Post Graduate center at Coimbatore under the headship of (Late) Prof.G. Sundararajulu.

In the Department have two Professor, one Reader and four Lecturers, in addition to two technical officers and three administrative staff.
