The Common Admission Test (CAT) is a computer based test held in India. It scores on the bases of Quantitative Ability (QA), Verbal Ability (VA) and Reading Comprehension (RC), Data Interpretation (DI) and Logical Reasoning (LR).

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) started the exam and use the test for selecting students for their business administration programs.

Eligibility:
• One should have passed a bachelor’s degree from any recognized university or college.

• In graduation, one should have obtained minimum 50% marks for general candidates and 45% marks for SC, ST & PwD/DA candidates.

• The percentage of marks secured will be calculated on the basis of practice followed by the college/university from where one has obtained the bachelor’s degree.

• One appearing in the final year of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification is also eligible to apply.

• One appearing in the qualifying exam is required to produce a certificate from the principal/registrar of their college stating that one has completed all the requirements for obtaining the bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification.

• There is no age limit for the CAT aspirants


Qualifying Examinations:

One has to qualify/appearing in any one of the following examinations to get eligible for CAT:

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering/ technology or BE/B. Tech equivalent examinations of professional Societies, recognized by MHRD/UPSC/AICTE.

• Any qualification recognized by AIU, New Delhi, which is equivalent to a bachelor’s degree awarded by colleges/ universities recognized by UGC.

Test pattern and Duration

CAT is a computer based test which consists of 100 objective type questions.
There are 3 sections in the test:
• Verbal and Reading Comprehension (VRC)
• Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DI & LR)
• Quantitative Ability (QA)

The Quantitative Ability and Verbal& Reading Comprehension sections consist of 34 questions, whereas the Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning section has 32 questions.

Along with the objective type questions, there are some non-multiple choice questions in each section. Candidates have to answer in the space provided to them.

The total duration of the test is 180 minutes or 3 hours. However, each section of the test has a time limit of 1 hour each.

The test takers cannot switch between the sections and have to attend the test in a particular order.
