The Centre for English Language Studies of University of Hyderabad provides English proficiency courses to students across the university. The faculty of the Centre teach English to the Integrated Masters students of the university and also offer English language courses for specific disciplines M. Phil in English Language Studies M. Phil Syllabus: Course work for I Semester (16 credits) Core Courses: i) Research Methods (4 credits) ii) Theoretical Foundations of Language, Learning and Teaching (4 credits) Optional courses: Scholars have to do any two of these courses depending on their chosen area of research, in consultation with the supervisor. All courses are of 4 credits each. i) Syllabus Design and Materials Development ii) Theories of Teaching Language Skills iii) Testing and Evaluation iv) Discourse Analysis v) English Phonetics and Phonology vi) English Morphology, Syntax and Semantics vii) Sociolinguistics viii) Psycholinguistics ix) Any other course based on the scholar’s area of research Entrance Examination: Written Examination: 75 marks Interview: 25 marks Written examination will consist of three parts, two of which will be objective type. Section A will test proficiency in English by means of objective type questions. (25 marks, with negative marking. 0.33 will be deducted for every wrong answer) Section B also of objective type will consist of a question or questions testing problem solving abilities or data analysis.
