The Department of Organic chemistry was established in the year 1950 by the University of Madras to impart higher quality of education especially in the field of Organic Chemistry.

It is one of the science departments to focus on research in the area of organic chemistry.

The department is focusing its efforts in teaching and research activities at M.Sc., M.Phil and Ph.D levels.
