Re: Christ Church University Karate Club

Christ Church College Karate Club is the student sports club with the longest continuous membership, having run continuously since it was founded in 1980 by Dr.G.Dussart.

The Club is a non-profit making, members club which practices traditional Shotokan Karate.

There are about 40 members in the club and 10-20 members train in term time. The age range is 17-63 y.

The Christ Church College Karate Club is affiliated to

the Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB)
the KUGB is the largest and one of the oldest established martial arts associations in the UK with about 12000 members.

The KUGB has a strong administrative and training structure with full time officers and a minimum of politics. Senior personnel include Sensei K.Enoeda 8th Dan and Sensei A.Sherry 7th Dan.

In the KUGB system, it usually takes about 5-6 years of regular training (at least twice weekly) to gain a black belt (Sho Dan), though it can be achieved in an absolute minimum of 3 years. At present, only Sensei Enoeda and Sensei Sherry are considered sufficiently senior to award the grade of black belt.
Currently, the KUGB has about 10 sixth-dans, 20 fifth-dans and 40 fourth-dans throughout the country. Technical strongholds include London, Liverpool and Leeds.

The are several black belt instructors including:

Dr. G.Dussart (4th Dan) (30 years karate experience)
Dr Mandy Gibson (3rd Dan) (20 years karate experience)
Mr J.Frayne (1st Dan) (25 years karate experience)
Mr Ben Richardson (1st Dan)(15 years karate experience)
Mr Ray Callejo (1st Dan)(10 years karate experience)

Cost

The Club is non-profit making, though balck-belt instructors are paid a small honorarium. There is

no joining fee
no annual subscription
no need to purchase a suit
- merely a training fee of £1.00 per two hour session.
