The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was built up in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. In 1944, it was renamed as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. The year 1964 was an imperative point of interest ever, when it was announced Deemed to be a University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act (UGC), 1956.

Since its commencement, the Vision of the TISS has been to be an establishment of incredibleness in advanced education that constantly reacts to changing social substances through the improvement and use of information, towards making a people-focused, naturally practical and just society that advances and secures pride, equity, social equity and human rights for all.

Developments:

2006-2014: The quantity of Master's projects offered by TISS expanded from 4 to the current 38; a patched up M.Phil.- Ph.D. program was presented, and a few new Diploma and Certificate programs too. New TISS grounds in Guwahati and Hyderabad are set up.

2012: The M.A. Social Work program is rebuilt to be offered in 9 topical territories. Five new Master's Programs are started: Climate Change and Sustainability, and Library and Information Science (from TISS Mumbai); and Ecology, Environment Sustainable Development, Rural Development and Governance, and Social Work (from TISS Guwahati). 5-year Integrated B.A. Sociologies and M.A. is presented from the Guwahati, Hyderabad and Tuljapur Campuses.

2011: The Institute commends its Platinum Jubilee. The aggressive and way breaking Transformation of M-Ward Project is started.
