The combined Department of Mathematics and Statistics came into presence in November 1976, with the real target of creating it to a Center of Excellence in this locale in numerical sciences and applications and to give offices to preparing, study and research in these ranges.

This Department was bifurcated to frame a free Department of Mathematics on first January, 1996. The Department conducts two Masters Degree programs, one in Mathematics and another in Operations Research and Computer Applications, a M.Phil. Program in Mathematics and Ph.D. programs.

The understudies of the M.Sc. (O.R. also, C.A) program discover work in programming improvement focuses and R and D organizations. Understudies of M.Sc. (Arithmetic) by and large take up showing positions or settle on exploration.

The Department has created around 60 Ph.D.s and has distributed around 270 exploration papers in refereed diaries. Aside from giving direction in post graduate courses, the Department has from the very beginning taken the initiative in advancing examination in arithmetic and its applications, particularly in this a player in the nation.

Thrust areas of research are Stochastic Control theory, Retrial Queues, Mathematical Finance, Graph Theory, Combinatorial Convexity Theory, Algebra, Fuzzy Mathematics, Wavelet Analysis, Operator Theory, Fractal Geometry, Topology, Topological Dynamics and Fluid Mechanics.

The division has been accepting a library stipend from NBHM since 1991. The office library has around 7500 books and subscribes 12 Indian and 3 remote diaries, Mathematical Reviews and Mathscinet. Additionally, the division has been co-ordinating the Mathematical Olympiads and related preparing programs for school youngsters with the help of NBHM since 1990.
