IIMC offers Diploma Course in Development Journalism for mid-career journalists. Course is organized under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC). Diploma Course in Development Journalism: Eligibility: Graduation in any discipline with minimum five years’ experience in media. Ability to comprehend, converse and write in English. Age: Below 45 years Number of Seats 25 seats Curriculum 1. Communication and Development: This module focusses on Communication and Development, broadly covering the role and importance of communication in development. There is a growing realization that effective communication strategies form a cornerstone of any development model. This is especially true of developing countries with wide diversities, be they ethnic, social, religious or economic. The role of various types of media in development is explored in detail. The module also examines the impact and possibilities of the use of new technology in communication for development. International communication and telecommunication issues are also covered. A country presentation and report analysing Media and development issues form the practical component of this module. 2. Development Journalism: Building on the theoretical inputs and grounding imparted, as part of the module on communication, the course seeks to improve the capabilities and to develop the skills of analysis and reportage of the participants in the field of Development Journalism. The module, therefore, strives to hone the current skills of the participants and further enables them to extend their competencies and range of skills. Thus, moving beyond the routine, the endeavour is to provide specialized inputs to the participants on a number of emerging areas of development journalism such as gender, trade, environment reporting, health reporting and in-depth feature writing. Some exposure will be provided to developing competency in radio, TV and on-line media. The participants are required to submit 8 reporting/editing assignments out of which the best 5 will form part of the final evaluation. 3. Media and Ethics: The issues of media ethics and normative issues are a natural corollaryto the active role envisaged for media in development by the tenets of Development Journalism. The module on Media and Ethics covers issues of bias, freedom, censorship, regulation, ethics, media ownership structures and their impact, among others. In order to provide the participants with an opportunity for the exchange of professional views and to develop an international dimension to their professional outlook, presentations, discussions and debates on media related topics and issues of current relevance form an important segment of the practical work of the module. 4. Economic Development and Globalization: The module is designed to initiate debate and discussion on the process of Globalization and its multifaceted impact on developing economies. Issues related to national economic development and the process of liberalization are also looked into. New emerging issues and concerns such as governance in the context of globalisation and the role of W.T.O. are also discussed. The participants are required to do a large number of practical assignments and go on field visits for improving their skills and for blending theory with practice. Participants will be encouraged to file news and features to their own news organisations using e-mail.
