IES Stands For Indian Engineering Service Conduct By Upsc Once In A Year

Where As DRDO Is Totally Based On Lab Work ,Conducted Its Own entrance exam

Both IES And Drdo Is A Govt Job.

As you said your friend has passed IES exam and want to join DRDO , so as per me he can not go for it , to joine DRDO he need to appear in its own entrance exam :

DRDO selects candidates by two different selection processes.

DRDO visits selected colleges and select candidates by interviewing candidates there. Candidates are short listed for Interview according to their rank in their branch.

DRDO conducts Scientist Entry Test (SET) to select candidates.
