It was established in the year 1961.
It is located in Rourkela, Odisha, India.
It is an Institute of National Importance.
The institute is at a distance of about 7 km from the railway station.
The campus of the institute comprising of the institute buildings, halls of residence and staff colony is located at the eastern end of Rourkela, beyond Sector-1, on land provided by the Government of Odisha.
It is bordered by small mountains on the south which are sometimes used as a picnic spot by group of students.
