Gauhati University (GU), Guwahati was established in 1948 under the Guwahati University Act 1947 of the government of Assam. It is recognized by UGC and has been awarded a "B" Grade on a four scale.

It is accredited by International Accreditation Organization. It is the oldest, the largest, and the most premiere seat of higher education in the entire North Eastern region of India.
