Lakshmibai National University of Physical Education Gwalior was established back in the year of 1957 and is a Government of India sponsored deemed university, under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, dedicated to promoting excellence in sports and physical education in the country. The campus is located on the Agra - Mumbai National Highway at Shaktinagar, Gwalior in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India.

In 1973, the college was renamed to Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education (LNCPE) and 9 years later, in 1982, was upgraded as an autonomous college.
