Yes, you can apply for PhD programme of the Centre for Biosystems Science and Engineering (BSSE) at the Indian Institute of Science after completing MBBS. The PhD programme of the Centre for Biosystems Science and Engineering (BSSE) at the Indian Institute of Science started in 2012. The Interdisciplinary PhD Programme in BSSE is open to both Master's and Bachelor's degree holders. Eligibility requirements to apply are: a. For Master's degree holders: MSc, ME, MTech, MPhil, MD, etc., in any branch of engineering or science. b. For Bachelor's degree holders: A four-year degree in engineering, medicine, science (BE, BTech, MBBS, BS) in any engineering or science discipline. c. For both Master's and Bachelor's degree holders: At least two mathematics courses after 12th standard are mandatory for all applicants. Course Curriculum Research Training Programme BSSE PhD students get well-rounded background in basic subjects of engineering and biology before embark on research in the laboratories of two advisers. It has developed a core curriculum that all of the students must go through. There is also ample choice for taking elective courses. • Those who join the programme with ME/MTech/MSc (Eng.) or equivalent have to finish 15 credits. And those with BE/BTech/MSc or equivalent need to finish 18 credits. • Core courses of this programme (to be taken by all students) 1. BE 201 3:0 Fundamentals of Biomaterials and Living Matter (AUG) 2. BE 202 3:0 Thermodynamics and Transport in Biological Systems (JAN) 3. BE 203 0:1 Bioengineering Practicum 1 (AUG) 4. BE 204 0:1 Bioengineering Practicum 2 (JAN) 5. BE 205 3:0 Introduction to Biomechanics of Solids (JAN) 6. BE 206 3:0 Biology and Physiology for Engineers (AUG) • A mathematics course is highly recommended and should be taken as per the advice of the advisers. • Electives can be taken in any department in IISc as per the advice of the advisers. • One must take a comprehensive examination before completing their two years of study in IISc.
