The Centre for Theoretical Studies (CTS) was founded in 1972.

It ceased to exist at the end of 2003.

Beginning 2004, CTS has been replaced by the Centre for Contemporary Studies (CCS).

The Main aim of CTS was to foster interdisciplinary interactions by bringing together researchers with diverse scientific backgrounds, and to provide a stimulating atmosphere for carrying out independent research. Historically, many faculty members who initially joined CTS, later developed independent research groups and established new centres at IISc.

These include Centre for Environmental Sciences (CES), Centre for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (CAOS), Developmental Biology and Genetics Laboratory (DBGL), and Centre for High Energy Physics (CHEP).
