Can you tell me about the duration of the Direct Ph.D. program offered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering of IISc Bangalore? The Department of Mechanical Engineering of IISc Bangalore offers a richly integrated curriculum of education and research to its students. It offers Masters (M.E. and M.Sc(Engg.)) and Ph. D. programmes. At any time of the year, it has around 75 research scholars; the Department graduates 30 Master's degree students and about 8 Ph.D. research scholars. Direct Ph.D. The direct Ph.D. program in the department is meant for students with a B.E./B.Tech degree or equivalent, who have a very good academic record and have decided to do their Ph.D. at an early stage. The advantage of this special program over the traditional route of B.E./B.Tech -> M.E./M.Tech followed by a Ph.D. degree is a substantial savings in total time required to get the Ph.D. degree. Admission Admission to the direct Ph.D. program is open to students holding a B.E./B.Tech or equivalent degree. Admission is based on GATE plus an interview. Average Duration The average duration of the direct Ph.D. program is expected to be 5 years. Financial Aid Students get monthly scholarship of Rs.16,000 to Rs.18,000 (likely to be increased). Ph.D. The Ph.D. program in the department is meant for students with a M.E. / M.Tech degree. It is the main research degree. Students admitted to the course have to complete a Research Training Program (RTP) comprising of courses, followed by research work culminating in the doctoral thesis. Admission Admission to the Ph.D. program is open to students holding a Masters Degree in Engineering or equivalent. Admission is based on an interview.
