The Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit, established at the Institute in November 1976 by Professor C. N. R. Rao, has given a noteworthy push to boondocks zones of Chemistry.

Other than building up its own particular research and showing programs, Unit individuals interface intimately with different offices in the Institute. It likewise has cooperative ventures with a portion of the best labs on the planet and is perceived as a head research focus.

The University Grants Commission has perceived the Unit as a Center for Advanced Study in Solid State Chemistry. The Commission has additionally stretched out backing to the Unit under its Science and Technology Infrastructure Improvement Program.

The Department of Science and Technology has upheld the Unit under FIST (both at Level I and II) and IRHPA programs.

Research:

Exploratory and hypothetical examination sought after in the unit goes for comprehension assorted wonders connected with solids and consolidated stages and additionally fluids at a key level. Aside from basic examination, there is additionally critical accentuation on exploration exercises went for improvement of models for commercialization. Some progressing bleeding edge research regions sought after in the Unit are as per the following:
