The Academic Office of IIT Bombay exists to help facilitate, initiate and co-ordinate the academic work of the Institute, particularly the teaching and assessment of students. It acts as the repository of grades and academic records of all students, both past and present. It provides administrative support to the Senate, which is the highest academic body of the Institute. The Head of the Academic Office is the Dean of Academic Programmes , who is a senior professor of the Institute. The Dean is helped by a permanent administrative set up headed by a Deputy Registrar (Academic). Academic Office closely interacts with the Dean of Student Affairs ( DOSA), who looks after all non-academic problems of students. Structure of Academic Office The Postgraduate Unit deals with matters related to programmes such as: -Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D.) -Master of Technology (M.Tech.) -Master of Design (M. Des.) -Master of Philosophy (M. Phil.) -Master of Management (M.Mgt.) -Master of Science (M.S) -Postgraduate Diploma of IIT (PGDIIT). - The Undergraduate Unit deals with programmes such as : -Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) -Master of Science (M.Sc.) -Dual Degree (D.D.). Senate Committes: 1) Postgraduate Programmes Committee (PGPC) - It is chaired by the Dean Academic Programmes. The committee is responsible for scrutinizing details of course programmes and curricula proposed by various departments as well as formulation of Rules and Regulations for all Postgraduate programmes, including Ph.D. and recommend the same to the Senate for its approval. 2) Undergraduate Programmes Committee (UGPC) - It is chaired by the Dean (A.P.). The committee is responsible for scrutinizing details of course programmes and curricula proposed by various departments as well as formulation of Rules and Regulations for all Undergraduate programmes and recommend the same to the Senate for its approval.
