Machine learning aspire at developing algorithms that imitate the ability in humans to learn i.e., improve their “performance” with experience.

By performance means the various cognitive abilities. It is easy to observe that machine learning algorithms have far reaching cost in all aspects of living and hence are worth developing.
Though humans possess very many abilities, but are currently far from understanding how they learn/acquire/improve these abilities.

So the idea in machine learning is to develop mathematical models and algorithms that imitate human learning rather than understanding the phenomenon of human learning and replicating it.
