Birla Institute of Technology & Science (shortened BITS or BITS Pilani) is an Indian institute of higher education and a deemed university under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956.

It is widely known as the best private engineering institute and stands among the top Engineering and B-schools of India.

BITS Pilani Features in a number of international rankings. BITS Pilani was ranked 101-110th in the QS BRICS Ranking (2016) and 178th in the QS Asian University Ranking(2016).

Times Higher Education ranked BITS Pilani 601-800th in the World University Ranking (2017) and 196th in BRICS & Emerging Economies (2017).

Annual rankings of Engineering colleges in India have been published by India Today since 1997.

BITS Pilani ranked in the top five from 1997 to 2004, but the school opted out of the rankings from 2005 to 2008 because of a pending court case between it and India Today
