Re: IIT Madras Geotechnical

The IIT Madras Geotechnical Engineering Division in the Civil engineering department was established in the early 1960's.

Major areas of research in the Geotechnical engineering includes physico-chemical behaviour of soils, strength and deformation behaviour of soils, soil dynamics & earthquake engineering and machine foundations, soil stabilisation, stone/sand columns, reinforced earth, geosynthetics, environmental geotechnique and waste disposal, unsaturated soil mechanics, rock mechanics, Numerical methods in geotechnical engineering.

Geotechnical Engineering Programs

The division offers a two year full time M.Tech Program and research programs (MS & Ph.D) in Geotechncial engineering specialisation.

A number of theory and laboratory courses are offered by the faculty covering the diverse areas of Geotechnical Engineering.

Depending on the academic necessity, the students are also encouraged to take courses in other Civil Engineering areas and other departments.

Some of the undergraduate and post-graduate courses offered in the division are:

Advanced Soil Mechanics

Soil Dynamics
