The Department of Applied Mechanics was established in Indian Institute of Technology Madras in 1959 and has grown into a full fledged inter disciplinary graduate research department over the years. The Department focuses on academic activities in three broad areas viz., Biomedical Engineering, Fluid Mechanics and Solid Mechanics. Programs- Direct Ph.D / Ph.D The Department of Applied Mechanics offers selected candidates the opportunity to pursue doctoral level research leading to the PhD degree. The PhD candidate carries out research work in one of the research areas of interest (specialization) of the Department under the guidance of a faculty member. Fluid Mechanics Group Bio Medical Group Solid Mechanics group MS Program- The MS program of IIT Madras is the Masters level research program carried out under the guidance of a faculty member of the respective Department. On successfully completing the research work and producing the work in a thesis, the student earns the MS degree. Fluid Mechanics Group Bio Medical Group Solid Mechanics group Dual Degree- 5-year Dual Degree Program The Department of Applied Mechanics, IIT Madras has introduced a unique interdisciplinary Dual Degree Program along with the Departments of Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Ocean Engineering. The Department offers specializations in the areas of Bio-Medical Engineering, Fluid Mechanics and Solid Mechanics. BTech in Aerospace/Civil/Electrical/Ocean Engineering and MTech in Applied Mechanics with appropriate specialization. Master of Technology- 2-year MTech program This program brings together the broad disciplines of Solid Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics & Biomedical Engineering into a single fold with specialization in respective areas.
