It was formed in the year 2011.
It is located in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India.
It is one of the seven new Indian Institutes of Management the Indian government has set up during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan and it is mentored by IIM Bangalore

Campus

The institute is temporarily situated at National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli campus, until the permanent building is in place.
NIT–T is providing buildings for classes, hostel and faculty accommodation.
The Indian Institute of Management, Tiruchirappalli, has acquired 172.27 acres (69.72 ha) of land owned by the Bharathidasan University to construct its own buildings at Chinna Suriyur, where the construction work already started
