Indian Police Service Pros and Cons

I am interested to become an IPS officer. Can you please describe the Pros and Cons to become an Indian Police Service officer? Form my childhood, I want to do something for the our country and now I have completed my graduation so I can apply for this post.

Indian Engineering Services (IES) opens the door for a world of opportunities once you are able to clear the exam and the interview rounds.

And even though candidates are given the choice of their departments/posts, they are allotted only according to the rank.

Listed below are the pros and cons of joining railways after you have cleared IES:

Pros:

Serve the Country: Working with the railways is considered as a genuine opportunity to serve the nation.

Job Security: In times of economic depression, when you see people in the private sectors sweat over whether they will have their jobs or not, you will have absolute security.

Equal Pay: Since the structure of the payment is a matter of public record, there won’t be any insecurity as to who is earning more and who is earning less among colleagues.

Housing: Depending on where you are posted, you can be assured of a very decent housing and rest house facility available at your disposal.

Travel Perks: Subject to some terms and conditions, you and your family have the privilege to travel in trains anywhere in India, even after retirement.

Career Growth Opportunities: If you are good or very good at what you do, then sky is the limit when it comes to growth and opportunities.

Reasonable pay: The pay scale of an engineer in the railways is reasonably high, even though you will probably get more money if you work in the private sector; the perks and stature attached with this line of work will more than make up for it.

Standing in Society: The respect and the admiration in working for railways as an engineer will be unmatched.

Networking: You will come across and rub shoulders with some of the most influential and key personalities who are engaged in various roles of significance.

Cons:

No Fixed Shifts: If you are looking for a job where you will attend office 9-5 every day, this isn’t the right field for you.

Dealing with the Bureaucracy & Unions: It is not always smooth sailing when you work in railways, sometimes procedures and approvals are painstakingly slow or never get done at all.

Moderate Pay: Everything said and done, the amount of money you will earn will be a lot less than what your peers in the private sector will earn.

Transfers: Transfers are a bane of working in the government or defence services. Since the network of railways in India is huge, the frequency of transfers and locations could be a hindrance in leading a stable life.

Promotions: The promotions in railways will happen in batches where most of the people who joined together will be promoted together, meaning that the excellent and the worst performer will be on par.
