The Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad (IIT (ISM)) is a public engineering and research institution located in Dhanbad, India. It was a Deemed University before it got converted into an Institute of National Importance under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961.

It was ranked as the 8th best Engineering College of India in the Edu-Rand Rankings of 2015. The survey was done jointly by Edu, an Indian company and Rand Corporation, a non-profit American think-tank.

It has been ranked at 201-250 position among BRICS nations' and 24 among Mineral and Mining institutes by QS World University Rankings in 2017.

Student Life

Academic study at each level is balanced with a number of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.

The creative and leadership strength of the students is brought to the fore in the annual technocultural festival of IIT (ISM), Srijan, where the inventive engineering brains compete for success. Many departments also have their own technical festivals like Mechathlon & Sparx to foster the spirit of engineering.

Apart from the Technical events IIT (ISM) also hosts various sporting events like Mukabula, Calcio Cup & Rebound which are National level Cricket, and Football & Basketball Events respectively.

There are also various active student societies like Cyber Society, Chaynika Society, Photographic Society, Cultural Scientific & Literary Society, Music Society, Sports Society, NSS, Yoga which promote the students in various extracurricular activities.

The Student Activity Centre (SAC) has a swimming pool, gym, food cafe, and music club. There are various clubs related to dramatics, dance, music, quizzing, literary, photography, robotics, etc.

There is a student’s society by the name of IIT (ISM) Students Society (ISS). Students of the college also take part in social activities and causes of social uplift.

Kartavya, Fast Forward India (FFI) and Samitra are three such initiatives to help the underprivileged children around the college campus. Students have also built indigenous one of its kind formula racing cars.

On 14 September 2014 students of IIT (ISM) donated a record 1011 units in a single day eventually grabbing the top place in number of blood donations in Jharkhand.

Other activities include the student-published bi-annual campus newspaper Mailer Daemon, the annual inter-college cultural festival Srijan, the annual techno-management fest Concetto, the annual sports fest Parakram and the Spring Fest Basant.

There are several clubs operating in IIT (ISM) as for example: ISMDiaries, LITC, the Music Club, Toastmasters, etc.
