The Institute of Mathematical Sciences, formed in 1998, started off as a Department of Mathematics in 1959 and was one of the pioneering departments in the Faculty of Science, University of Malaya.

It is also an institute of study in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences as well as the Faculty of Education, and services the Faculty of Engineering.

This Institute has 41 academic staff comprising of 8 Professors, 6 Associate Professors, 24 Senior Lecturers, 2 Lecturers and 1 Senior Research Fellow.
