The Department of Biotechnology, Punjabi University, Patiala was set up under the aegis of University Grants Commission, New Delhi in 1987.

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India, New Delhi agreed acknowledgment to its M.Sc program in the scholarly session 1993-94.

To meet the developing HRD prerequisites of the sustenance and agro based ventures, the office additionally began a Diploma course in Microbial and Food Technology from the scholastic session 1991-92 which was raised to an undeniable M.Sc. program, subsidized by Govt. of Punjab, from the session 1994-95.

The Department has a staff of nine profoundly qualified educators who are working in push ranges of Fermentation Biotechnology, Food Biotechnology, Medical Biotechnology and Environmental Biotechnology.

The examination endeavors of the employees have been fortified as it has been perceived under the FIST program of DST, Govt. of India since 2003. Many real research ventures have been granted to the office by different financing organizations like DBT, ICAR, DST, AICTE, DNES and CSIR.

The Department is effectively occupied with the exploration work and has more than 200 distributions and a few licenses surprisingly. The office houses gear of more than 1 crore, with offices like Cold Room, Culture Room and Fermenters.

The office has a settled Bio-informatic lab with web office and virtual products, for example, Biomed
