The Post-graduate course of M.Sc. in Geographical Information System (GIS) was begun in the year 2008 under the stewardship of Dr. Ramu, the Course Coordinator at the Department of Geography, Maharaja's College, Mysore under the UGC Innovative Program.

The M.Sc. GIS course was moved from Maharaja's College to the Manasagangothri Campus as an autonomous Center with an adjustment in classification as "Community for Geoinformatics Technology" vide University Notification No. AC.2(S)/401/13-14 dated 24-05-2014 and is briefly housed at the DOS in Geography at Manasagangothri grounds and the staff and understudies of GIS were moved into this division in July 2014.

The course conveyance, at the Maharaja's College, is for making understudy experts with aptitude in Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) advances and in addition preparing a unit of youthful and lively scholastics knowledgeable in Sustainable Development points of view truly necessary for the nation, confronting more up to date and troublesome issues of improvement.

This course educates the uses of Cartography, Remote Sensing, GIS and GPS for, and in, Sustainable Development with contextual investigations from various nations, particularly from the Global South and India.The Center has adequate foundation offices and youthful educators to show Cartography, Remote Sensing, GPS and GIS, taking the worldwide and also neighborhood issues of Sustainable Development. It has gained satellite computerized information results of IRS/PAN, SPOT and LANDSAT. The Center has secured the product like ArcGIS Desktop and ERDAS Imagine for application purposes.

Any degree or proportional from a perceived College/University/Tertiary Educational Institution or a degree in Geography (B.A./B.Sc.)/any branch of Science (B.Sc.) or a degree in Social Science (B.A.)/Commerce or Management (B.Com/B.B.A/B.B.M) with Statistics or Mathematics at Junior College Level or a degree in Engineering (B.E./B.Tech.) or a degree in Architecture/Planning/Environmental/Biological or Agricultural Sciences with no less than 45% imprints (40% for SC/ST/Cat-I hopefuls) is qualified.

• Minor Research Project (2006-08)“Development of Dry land Agriculture in Selected villages of Nanjangud Taluk, Mysore District: A Special Analysis of Problems, Prospects and Strategies”, funded by the University of Mysore

• Major Research Project, (2008 April to 2010 March) “Water Resource Management of the Cauvery Basin: Irrigation Management Transfer as Strategy for Participatory Irrigation Management”, funded by the University Grant Commission (U.G.C), New Delhi

• Research Collaborations The Centre has been engaged in developing collaborations with several Foreign Universities, Indian Universities and GIS industries. Successfully, we have collaborations with the following two organizations:

1. MoU with Masaryk University, Czech Republic in the year 2011
2. MoU with InfoMaps Pvt. Ltd., a mapping organization in Chennai for Research, Training and Internships for students in the year 2013

MoU process is in progress with Waterloo University, Canada; Staffordshire University, UK; Bonn University, Germany; Nokia India Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi; EI Technology, Bangalore and Pancharathna Rural Urban Development Organization, Mysuru.
