The Department currently offers three degree programs.

The Ph.D and M.Sc. (Engg) programs have a focus on research and accept candidates with a B.E./B.Tech/M.E./M.Tech. or equivalent degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Metallurgical, Mineral, Chemical, Ceramics or Mechanical Engineering, and candidates with a Master’s degree in Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Mineral Processing, Materials Science or Applied Science.

Short-listed candidates are admitted on the basis of an interview.

Selection for the M.E. program is based on the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). This program places a greater emphasis on coursework.

Additionally, the department offers research programs for teachers from engineering institutions and external sponsored candidates from R&D labs and the industry.
