When making a PPT presentation, keep the following points in mind to be effective:

1-Do not use too much text. Do not fill the slide with redundant text – Follow the 6×6 rule i.e., 6 words per line and 6 lines per slide.

2-The font size should be satisfactorily big. A size over 72pt is always better. This way the person in the last row of the classroom can see your point.

3-Use illustrations . Illustrations are very helpful in grabbing attention of the spectators. Images and photos help in attracting and retaining attention.
Remember, “An image is worth a thousand words”. Use the PowerPoint templates if you are not very good with designs.

4-Keep the background design simple and do not use loud or a lot of colors. Adjust the color of the text to keep the text clear. If you have a light background, always keep the color of the text dark. Avoid using colors like yellow and other fluorescent colors as they cannot be seen clearly. Again, use PowerPoint templates if you are not comfortable with use of colors and design.

5-Avoid using a photo as your presentation background as it is distracting. Use professional backgrounds.

6-Do not use sound effects unless you are pretty sure of its utility as sound effects are off-putting most of the time.
Avoid capitalize fonts, as they are hard to read.

7-Use simple and professional fonts. Do not use fonts such as Comic Sans MS or Monotype Corsiva. Use the same font throughout the presentation for consistency.

8-Last but not the least, make your presentations a two-way communication. Keep your audience engaged by way of asking questions etc.
