The term “Taxation” comes from the Latin word “Taxatio”. It means to determine the payable quantum on estimate. According to Justice Holmes “The price paid to the government for living in a civilized society is the tax.

Characteristics
It is a compulsory levy under taxing act.
Tax payers cannot claim direct and proportionate or equivalent service for payment of tax.
It is a price paid to the government for living in a civilized society.

ii. indirect tax

B. on the basis of progression:
i. Progressive tax
ii. Proportionate tax
iii. Regressive tax

C. on the basis of base
i. single Tax
ii. multiple tax

Role of tax in the economic development of a country:
i. Productive use of available resources
ii. Contribution towards budget fund
iii. Direct investment
iv. Control on the economy
