Mizoram University was established on July 2, 2001, by the Mizoram University Act (2000) of the Parliament of India.

It is a central university under the University Grants Commission UGC, Government of India

The university is the fruit of the Mizoram Accord between Mizo National Front and Government of India on 30 June 1986

Initially, the university had seven academic departments, but it now has a total of 18 academic departments.
