Master of Science ) Program offered by IITM (Indian Institute of Technology Madras) is a post graduate program for those who are interested in research careers, changing careers or even for those who are seeking specific academic competence.

The course prepares in undertaking logical, rigorous, and managerially relevant research in various areas of management. The program is characterized by significant research component in the curriculum. It makes the program different from the M.Tech programme typically offered in engineering departments of IIT Madras.

The department offers two categories of the MS programmes:
• Master of Science (by Research)
• Master of Science (by Entrepreneurship)

Master of Science (By Research):

The MS (by Research) program is for students who want to start the research career. The program emphasizes the use of logical, analytical, experimental and intuitive thinking skills in the pursuit of research.

Provision is available to meritorious candidates to upgrade the registration to the PhD program if satisfy the following criteria:

• One should have been registered for a minimum of two semesters in the MS programme
• The minimum CGPA of 8.0 in the prescribed courses
• All other regulations will apply as per the senate norms

Master of Science (By Entrepreneurship):

The M.S (Entrepreneurship) exposes students to challenges and opportunities in entrepreneurship and requires them to design, develop, test and prove the techno-commercial viability of products/processes/business models that could eventually be commercialized by them.

In this programme, one needs to submit 2 thesis reports: one demonstrating significant contribution towards the technical feasibility of the product/process proposed; and the other documenting the commercial feasibility of the venture.

IITM offers incubation support to start ups by students through C-TIDES. Some of the start-ups developed by our students are: Scion Biomed Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Bodh Bridge Educational Services Pvt. Ltd., Samiksa Sali Integrated Systems Solutions Pvt. Ltd. and ecoLogin.

Guide Allocation Policy:
Research Scholars are given a months' time to interact with all the faculty members of the Department. At the end of one month, scholars are asked to give preference of guide - 3 choices.

Based on the preference of the scholar, the department will allocate the Research Guide. The first choice of the scholar is honoured in most of the cases.

The willingness of the faculty member concerned and the area of research are also kept in mind in deciding allocation.
