The University of Mumbai is one of the initial three state universities of India and the most seasoned in Maharashtra. It is contracted as MU for Mumbai University.

The University of Mumbai (Bombay) was set up in 1857. In August, 1864, Premchand Roychand, a shipper sovereign of Bombay, offered to the University a gift of Rs. 2,00,000 "towards the erection of a college library which might be an adornment to the city, and by turning into a storage facility of t he learned works, of the past as well as of numerous eras to come, might be the method for advancing the high closures of the University."

After two months this blessing was trailed by another endowment of Rs. 2,00,000 from the same contributor for a clocktower regarding the library to propagate the memory of his mom Mrs. Rajabai.
