The Pointer/Grading System calculation of credits for a course in UoM or University of Mumbai is as follows:

Calculation of Credits

The following basis is adopted for calculation of credits for a course.

1 semester = 15 weeks
1 credit = 1 hour of lecture per week i.e. 15 lecture hours.
Thus, a 2 credit course is of 30 lectures hours, a 3 credit course of 45 hours and a 4 credit course of 60 hours.


A course consist of lectures, tutorials, laboratory work, practical, seminars, field work, project work, internship and the combination may very from course to course.


To convert all practical, project and training workload into lecture hours, the following norms will be used:
2 hours of practical = 1 lecture hour
3 hours spent on project = 1 lecture hour


For internships and projects defined in terms of intensive training over a period and in terms of weeks/months, 4 credits are assigned to each month of training / project.


Some of the diploma courses at the Institute consist of several certificate courses. It is recommended that one who complete the requisite number of certificate courses and earn the prescribed credits for a Diploma courses be considered eligible for the award of the said Diploma, provided the certificate courses are completed within a time period of 10 semesters within a specified period.


Grading System
A Letter Grade system corresponding to ten point scale is adopted uniformly for all courses. The letter Grades and corresponding grade points are given below.
