The inception of Neurosurgery services in JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research) was in July 2006.

The neurosurgery team initially functioned under the administrative control of the department of General Surgery till 2008, when it was accorded the status of a full fledged department.

Services

In-Patient Services

1. Emergency medical services - are provided round the clock in the Emergency Medical Services center.
Patients who are managed conservatively are admitted in the EMSD. Facility for emergency X-ray, CT scan as well as CT angiogram is available in the EMSD. Patients requiring surgical management of emergency neurosurgical conditions are operated on in the EMSD and managed subsequently in the Neurosurgery ICU. Facilities to manage all neurosurgical emergencies are available, including traumatic brain and spine injuries, acute hydrocephalus, vascular disorders like aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, stroke, brain tumors, etc facilities for intracranial pressure monitoring is available in the ICU.

2. Elective neurosurgery services - The department of Neurosurgery admits in-patients in Ward 149 (male and female wards).
The ward is located on the 2nd floor of the Superspecialty block. Two neurosurgery special ward rooms are available and are located on the 2nd floor of the superspecialty block.
The neurosurgery ICU is ward 149A, located on the 1st floor of the superspecialty block.
The ICU adjoins the operating room complex where the neurosurgery OR is located.

3. Referral services - The department provides intra-mural referral services to all departments in the institute, round the clock. Besides this, patients are frequently referred from surrounding institutes for elective and emergency management.

Out-Patient Services
The Neurosurgery out-patient is run at OPD 210, located on the first floor of the OPD complex of the superspecialty block.
The OPD timings are from 8:30 am onwards. The OPD schedule is -
