National Oil Companies, viz, ONGC and OIL are completing hydrocarbon investigation and generation (E&P) exercises in the nation since initiation. Ensuing upon progression in oil division in 1990s, the cooperation of remote and Indian organizations in the investigation and advancement exercises to supplement the endeavors of national oil organizations was seen to limit the hole amongst supply and request.

Government of India has marked creation sharing contracts for 28 found pieces, 28 investigations hinders under pre-NELP administration and 254 pieces under NELP administration with National Oil Companies and private (both Indian and remote)/Joint Venture organizations as licensee for pieces. At exhibit out of, 310 investigation pieces granted so far under different offering rounds (Discovered Field, Pre-NELP and NELP), 135 pieces/fields are operational. 17 obstructs under assignment are being worked by ONGC and OIL.

Out of aggregate 310 blocks (counting Pre-NELP and NELP), 140 investigation pieces have been surrendered and 25 blocks are under procedure of surrender. At present E&P exercises in 135 blocks are in advance.
