The Research Aptitude Test in (RAT) - Mass Communication is being conducted by the Teerthanker Mahaveer University for admission in to the Ph.D Mass Communication. Here are the details of it:

Eligibility:
The applicant should have completed MA in Mass Communication with good academic record from any recognized university of India.

Syllabus
MMUNICATION
The syllabus for Research Aptitude Test (RAT) in Mass Communication is divided in two parts viz. Part A & Part B described as below:

PART – A
Part A of the RAT shall be designed to assess the research skills/aptitude of the candidate consisting of questions from the following areas:
1. Research Methodology: meaning, characteristics, and ethical issues in research; types of research; research methods.

2. Logical Reasoning: arguments, deductive and inductive research; logical and Venn diagram; inferences; analogies.

3. Data Interpretation: interpretation of data; mapping and analysis of data, tools for data analysis; quantitative and qualitative research.
4. General Awareness about Basic Science: basic science up to the level of SSC.
5. Mathematical Reasoning: number series, letter series, codes; relationships, classification.

PART – B
Part-B of RAT is designed to assess subject specific knowledge of the candidate covering the syllabus given as below:

Communication and Mass Communication: Basic concepts, communication theories and models, application of theories and models in mass media, mass communication and mass culture, types of culture and effects of mass media on mass culture.
Mass Media and Society: Societal needs and issues, media’s contribution to society, media’s relationship with the state, freedom of press and the benefits of the society attached to it, role of media in a democratic society.

Print media: Role of newspapers in the freedom movement, growth of print media in post Independence era, changing media scenario and present day newspapers, new concepts and practices in journalism, contemporary trends.

Broadcast Media: Growth of radio and television in India, policy initiatives and their impact, important committees and legislations, news and current affair programmes, formats and production of programmes, major developments and contemporary trends.

New Media: Basics of computer and internet, web media and its spread, benefits of connectivity, social networking sites, misuse of internet and cyber crimes, mobile phone as an instrument of convergence for print, radio, TV, and web; latest trends.
Traditional and community media: Folk media and tribal media, relevance of traditional media in modern society, need of an alternate media, community media as against corporate media, low cost media as against capital intensive media.

News media: Media for information and education; expansion, reach and usefulness of news media, news bulletins and news based programmes, people’s response to news channels, role of news media in advocacy, sting operations, media and democracy.
Entertainment media: TV serials and other entertainment programmes, talent hunts in music and dance, channels devoted to music, films, sports, travel, fashion etc, cinema as the popular medium of entertainment, contemporary trends in Indian cinema.
Corporate Communication: Integrated marketing communication; advertising- the commercial and the social aspects; public relations- the new concepts and changing trends; event management for promotion of corporate, industry practices in post liberalisation era.

International Communication: Information gaps and imbalances in the world, new world information and communication order, issues of developing countries and the role of developed countries, institutions for bridging the gap, United Nations and other world bodies, WTO.

Communication and development: Concept of development, development models, issues of development, development communication and development support communication, rural and urban development, role of media in development, development journalism.

Media laws and ethics: Freedom of the press, laws passed by Parliament with regard to print, radio, TV, cyber and cinema, laws of general application also applied on media, Broadcast Bill and the content code, ethical guidelines, self regulatory mechanism and social responsibility, regulation of media by the executive, judiciary activism.
General Awareness about Social Sciences: Basic understanding of Political Science (mainly Indian polity), issues of governance and public administration; Economics (mainly Indian economy post liberalization); History (mainly freedom movement, social and cultural movements).

Language Skills: Comprehension and writing skills in English and Hindi languages, rules of grammar, news and non news formats of writing, writing styles, writing for diverse media including print, radio, TV, web, mobile and cinema.
