The University of Calcutta is an open state college situated in Kolkata (some time ago Calcutta), West Bengal, India set up on 24 January 1857. It was the principal foundation in Asia to be set up as a multidisciplinary and mainstream Western-style college.

Rankings

The college is perceived as a standout amongst the most prestigious colleges on the planet. The University of Calcutta was positioned 601-650 in the QS World University Rankings of 2011 and 43 in the QS University Rankings for Asia in 2012. In India, it was positioned 2 by the India Today Top India Universities of 2012 and 2013 and 2014.

Accreditation and acknowledgment

In 2001 the college was recompensed the status of a 'five star college' by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.

On 8 December 2005, the Indian University Grants Commission proclaimed Calcutta University as a ''University with Potential for Excellence'.

The Manuscript Library at the college has been as of late assigned as a Manuscript Conservation Center under the National Mission for Manuscripts, which was set up in 2003.

On 5 January 2010, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council recompensed its most elevated evaluation of "A" to the college.
