The Department of Physics in Presidency University has a prosperous practice of excellent teaching and scholarly research. It has thorough and broad-based undergraduate programme and dedicated faculty with wide-ranging research interests.

It is in the process of a complete re-organization of its teaching curriculum, laboratory facilities, building infrastructure and teaching and research faculty.

The old Baker Laboratories is being rejuvenated to host modern research and teaching facilities.

Theoretical and experimental research activities are carried out in the department in the fields of Astrophysics (extragalactic optical, radio and X-ray Astronomy), Physics of materials (nanostructured materials, nanometal clusters, organic-inorganic hybrid composites, graphene based composites), Statistical Physics, Quantum Mechanics and Remote sensing.
