Re: PTH Effect on TSH

The thyroid gland has one function that does a bunch of things- it makes thyroid hormone, which drives the entire metabolism, and affects everything. Thyroid disease is common, as well as often is mild. It can cause a great variety of symptoms, including the twitches and tingling.

The TSH will not tell one anything about parathyroid function.

The parathyroid glands are next to the thyroid glands, but it's very rare for something to affect them both. The biggest relation between them is that when somebody is operating on one they sometimes damage the other.

Hyperparathyroidism is common. To test for either one, you'd test the PTH levels- parathyroid hormone levels. The only cause anybody would test PTH is that they'd first test calcium. Calcium is tested all the time.

It would not be a surprise if they are testing the calcium just 'cause they always do. Low calcium would certainly be present if in fact had hypoparathyroidism.

Total thyroidectomy as well as radioiodine treatment in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer may affect functions of parathyroid glands. Endogenous thyroid hormone stimulation to increase radioiodine uptake in thyroid remnants or metastases is a common process in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer.

Therefore, the aim of this learning is to evaluate the effect of increased serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels on parathormon (PTH) levels.
