The Department of Human Biology at Punjabi University was established in 1970

A UGC-funded research centre in Physical Education and Sports was set up in 1973 which became an independent Department of Sports Sciences in 1989.

The Department has a rich history of providing supervision for M.D., M.Sc. and a comprehensive doctoral research programme in the fields of immunogenetics, human population genetics, biochemical genetics, cytogenetics, molecular genetics and human growth and development.
