The American Association of Diabetes Educators offers Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) Certification Program.

Eligibility Requirements to become Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE)

It requires individuals to accrue professional practice experience prior to applying.

It is not intended to serve as an entry level to the speciality.

This practice experience is necessary in order to master the knowledge and application of that knowledge associated with the specialty.

Eligibility Requirements for Initial Certification – 2017
Meet the discipline/licensure requirement; then
Obtain minimum professional practice experience providing DSME; as well as
Obtain minimum continuing education hours; and lastly
Apply and pay the application fee.

Discipline Requirement
One must be:
a) A clinical psychologist, registered nurse, occupational therapist, optometrist, pharmacist, physical therapist, physician (M.D. or D.O.), or podiatrist holding a current, active, unrestricted license from the United States or its territories.
OR
b) A dietitian or dietitian nutritionist holding active registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration, physician assistant holding active registration with the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants
OR
c) A health professional with a master's degree or higher in social work from a United States college or university accredited by a nationally recognized regional accrediting body.
