National Housing Bank (NHB), a wholly owned subsidiary of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), was set up on 9 July 1988 under the National Housing Bank Act, 1987. NHB is an apex financial institution for housing. National Housing Bank (NHB) plays an important role in the growth of housing finance institutions in India in many ways. The National Housing Bank has the following role and functions: To provide refinance facilities to housing finance institutions and scheduled banks To provide guarantee and underwriting facilities to housing finance institutions To promote and develop specialised housing finance institutions for mobilising resources and extending credit for housing To formulate schemes for mobilisation of resources and extension of credit for housing, especially catering to the needs of economically weaker sections of society To provide guidelines to housing finance institutions to ensure their healthy growth To co-ordinate the working of all agencies connected with housing According to the National Housing Bank Act, the NHB is empowered to raise funds through The issue of bonds and debentures Borrowings from the Central Government and other institutions approved by the Central Government Acceptance of deposits of long-term duration Short-term accommodation from the Reserve Bank Long-term loans out of the National Credit (Long-Term Operations) Fund to be established by the RBI for supporting the business of NHB Borrowings in foreign currency from banks or financial institutions in India or abroad.
