Sikkim Manipal University was established in 1995. It is recognized by the University Grants Commission and approved by the Government of India. It is the first ever Public Private Partnership (PPP) in India for higher Education and Health Care services.

Its mission is to develop SMIT into an institute of excellence capable of producing competent techno-managers who can contribute effectively to the advancement of the society.
