Structure Of IAS Exam
I have applied for the IAS exam and starting the preparation for this exam so can you please give me some details about the exam pattern and the marking scheme of the IAS exam so that I can do my preparation of IAS exam according to the exam pattern?

I completed studies and planning to apply for Civil services IAS examination searching for some details about this exam. Will you please tell what the IAS Exam Pattern or structure for Mains and prelims exam so that I can prepare accordingly also provide exam important dates?

The pattern of Civil services examination has been designed to test the academic expertise of a candidate and that candidate's ability to present himself/herself in a systematic and coherent manner. IAS Exam Pattern for Mains- There would two types of Papers in the examination- Qualifying Papers and Papers that will be counted for Merit formation. The former part will consist of two language exams, one of the candidate’s choice and other of English. The latter part will consist of 7 papers and there will be about 300 questions each. They will be of 250 marks each. IAS Mains will comprise of both essay writing and objective type questions. The sum total of all papers and the score secured in the direct interview will be used for ranking of the candidate. IAS Exam Pattern for Personality Test- A test of 275 Marks would be taken of the candidates qualified in the Mains Examination. This would include Psychometric Test, Assessment Test as well as the Personal Interview. The Marks obtained in the Personality Test would be added in the calculation for the declaration of the final Merit list. Paper Title of the Paper Marks Allotted Paper 1 Essay writing 250 Marks Paper 2 General Studies–I (Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society) 250 Marks Paper 3 General Studies –II (Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International relations) 250 Marks Paper 4 General Studies –III (Technology, Economic Development, Bio‐diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management) 250 Marks Paper 5 General Studies –IV (Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude) 250 Marks Paper 6 Optional Subject – Paper 1 250 Marks Paper 7 Optional Subject – Paper 2 250 Marks Sub Total in the written Test 1750 Marks Personal Interview 275 Marks Grand Total ( for merit calculation) 2025 Marks Important dates: UPSC will publish notification for 2019 Civil Services Examination on February 19, 2019, while online applications can submit on or before 6.00 PM, March 18, 2019. |
